Dr. Esther Joy Bowles serves as a researcher in the School of Rural Medicine within the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of New England, Armidale, Australia. She obtained her PhD from the School of Complementary Medicine at Southern Cross University between 2003 and 2006, with her doctoral thesis examining the effects of essential oils on cognitive function in dementia. Complementing her doctorate, she holds a BSc Honours, Graduate Certificate in Environmental Education, and Certificate IV in Small Business Management. From 2013 to 2014, Bowles was employed as a Research Assistant on the Telehealth Project at the University of New England's School of Rural Medicine. Her expertise extends to essential oil science education, project management, and roles such as Research Officer and Practice Change Facilitator with the NSW Department of Primary Industries from 2023 to 2025.
Bowles' academic interests center on herbal medicine, natural product chemistry, phytochemicals, antioxidant activities, bioactivity, and the clinical applications of essential oils and aromatherapy in human health. Her research addresses diverse topics including the management of viral respiratory infections, chronic kidney disease labeling by general practitioners, diabetes outcomes in general practice, participation of rural individuals aging with intellectual disabilities, and quality appraisal of aromatherapy studies. She has produced 27 peer-reviewed publications, among them 'Australian Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) oil: an updated review of antimicrobial and other medicinal properties' (2025), 'Essential criteria for reporting of aromatherapy-focused research in humans: An international Delphi consensus study protocol' (2025), 'General practitioners’ assessment and management of chronic kidney disease in older patients: a mixed methods study' (2024), 'Quality Appraisal of Research Reporting for Aromatherapy and Essential Oil Studies in Humans: Proposed Checklist for Transparent Reporting for Essential oil and Aroma Therapeutic Studies' (2023), 'Efficacy and safety of Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) oil for human health—A systematic review of randomized controlled trials' (2023), 'Effects of essential oils on symptoms and course (duration and severity) of viral respiratory infections in humans: A rapid review' (2020), and her book 'The Chemistry of Aromatherapeutic Oils' (2020 edition). These works have received 385 citations and 8,666 reads on ResearchGate, underscoring her influence in complementary and rural medicine. Bowles engages in public health outreach, including coordinating the Heart Health Showcase and contributing to Q Fever symposiums at UNE.
