Juan Mundel serves as executive director and associate professor in the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, where he joined in July 2021 as director of Global Initiatives and associate professor. He earned his doctorate in Media and Information Studies from Michigan State University, a master’s degree in journalism and world languages from West Virginia University, and a bachelor’s degree from Blas Pascal University in Argentina. Previously, Mundel was an assistant professor of public relations and advertising at DePaul University in Chicago, where he directed the Latino Media and Communication Program. He has secured multiple grants for research in advertising related to cultural identity and diversity, participated in more than 25 panels on brand awareness, product packaging, and social media ads, and developed study abroad programs, conferences, and workshops.
Mundel’s research specializations include tailored health communication for Hispanics, personalized advertising on social media, artificial intelligence and promotional devices in service businesses, and critical media perceptions of gender, LGBTQ+, and gender-based violence. Notable publications are “Tailored T2D risk communication for Hispanics: ethnic endorser effects on health and sharing intentions” (Ethnicity and Health, 2026, with Madouh, Vizcaíno, Aparício), “Artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality, social media, online reviews, and influencers: a review of how service businesses use promotional devices and future research directions” (International Journal of Advertising, 2025, with Chu, Yim), “Critical Media Perceptions of Gender, LGBTQ+, and Gender-Based Violence in El Salvador: Implications for Attitudes” (Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, 2025, with McClaran), and editor’s letters in Journal of Advertising Education (2023, 2025). His awards include the Ph.Digital Bootcamp Fellowship from Texas State University and the Knight Foundation, Chicago Scholars’ 35 Under 35 Young Leaders Making an Impact in Chicago, 2019 AEJMC Minorities in Communication Division Poindexter Grant, and 2017 Excellence in Teaching Citation from Michigan State University. At Cronkite, he expands international partnerships, student opportunities in Latin America and China, and embeds multicultural modules into curricula.
