Dr. Jubilee Smith is a Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at Southern Cross University, serving as Primary Course Coordinator. With more than 25 years of experience in primary and tertiary education, she is a qualified educator, leader, and emerging researcher recognized for her excellence in communication, collaboration, and leadership in digital technology in education. Her academic background includes a Bachelor of Teaching (BTeach), Graduate Diploma in Education (GradDipEd), Master of Education (MEd), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), all earned from Southern Cross University. Her PhD, completed in 2023, focused on early childhood educators' decision-making with digital interactive technology. An accredited New South Wales teacher, Smith has extensive teaching expertise in Digital Technology, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), English Curriculum, Literacy Education, and Professional Experience. She received the Vice Chancellor's Teaching Award for outstanding teaching and is an active member of the Early Years Research Lab, contributing to initiatives like the NSW Screens in Learning project on screen use, pre-service teacher practices, and inclusive co-design.
Smith's research specializations include digital technologies and literacy, emerging technologies such as generative AI, digital well-being, and cyber safety. She is investigating the role of music in enhancing young children's literacy learning and pre-service educators' use of digital technology. Over 20 years in digital technology and ICT in education, she has authored key works such as her PhD thesis "Early Childhood Educator Decision-Making about Digital Technology: An Unexplored Dimension" (2023), "Feeling good about teaching mathematics: addressing anxiety amongst pre-service teachers" (Creative Education, 2014, with W. Boyd et al.), and "Practical assessment on the run – iPads as an effective mobile assessment tool" (Research in Learning Technology, 2015, with R. Franklin et al.). She has presented at national and international conferences, including the Australian Literacy Educators Association (ALEA), Primary English Teaching Association Australia (PETAA), Early Childhood Australia (ECA), Australian Association for Research in Education (AARE), and European Early Childhood Education Research Association (EECERA). Smith serves on the committee of the Northern NSW branch of ALEA, organizing professional learning, student scholarships, and prizes, and is active in PETAA. She is available to supervise Honours students.
