About Judith

Judith L. Goldstein is the Janet M. Peck Professor of International Communication, Professor of Political Science at Stanford University, and Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. She is also the Kaye University Fellow in Undergraduate Education. Goldstein received her BA in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley in 1973, her Master of International Affairs from Columbia University in 1975, and her PhD in Political Science from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1983. Her academic career at Stanford began in 1981 as an Acting Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science, followed by promotions to Assistant Professor (1983-1989), Associate Professor (1990-1998), and Professor (1998-present). She has held significant administrative roles, including Chair of the Faculty Senate (2020-present), Senior Associate Dean for Graduate and Undergraduate Studies in the School of Humanities and Sciences (2002-2005), Chair of the Department of Political Science, Director of the Undergraduate Program in International Relations (2011-2012), and service on various university committees such as the Committee on Undergraduate Admissions and Financial Aid and the Accreditation Committee.

Goldstein's research centers on international political economy, with a particular emphasis on trade politics, including the political conditions for trade liberalization, tariff bargaining, public opinion on globalization, and the effects of economic downturns on attitudes toward trade and immigration. She has authored or edited six books, notably Ideas, Interests and American Trade Policy (Cornell University Press, 1994), The Evolution of the Trade Regime: Politics, Law and Economics of the GATT and the WTO (Princeton University Press, 2005), Legalization and World Politics (edited, Cornell University Press, 2001), Ideas and Foreign Policy: Beliefs, Institutions, and Political Change (edited with Robert O. Keohane, 1993), Back to Basics: State Power in the Contemporary World (edited with Martha Finnemore, Oxford University Press, 2013), and International Institutions (edited with Robert B. Steinberg, 2010). Her influential articles include "Membership has its Privileges: Understanding the Effects of the GATT/WTO" (with Michael Tomz and Douglas Rivers, American Economic Review, 2007), "America and the Trade Regime: What Went Wrong?" (with Ryan Gulotty, International Organization, 2021), and "Trade as Villain: Belief in the American Dream and Declining Support for Globalization" (with Cameron Ballard-Rosa and Nita Rudra, Journal of Politics, 2024). A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Goldstein chairs the editorial board of International Organization and serves on the boards of World Trade Review, International Studies Quarterly, and World Politics. Her work has profoundly influenced the study of international trade institutions, domestic politics, and global economic policy.
