Always supportive and inspiring to all.
Judith Swan is the e-Developer for Early Learning in Medicine (ELM) in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Otago, Dunedin, part of the Health Sciences Division. In this role, she supports the development of educational materials crucial for first-year medical students. She joined the Faculty of Medicine as an education researcher in 2008 and has been responsible for developing the ELM e-cases since 2013. These e-cases are designed to integrate key aspects of medical science, clinical practice, and patient and community perspectives. Partially delivered online, they incorporate continually updated content to ensure relevance and currency in medical education delivery.
Judith Swan's professional contributions include her designation as Professional Practice Fellow and eCase Writer at Otago Medical School. Her work in eDevelopment for ELM encompasses support for assessment processes, where she previously served as Assessment Convener, aiding conveners in creating effective assessments. Additionally, she has been affiliated with the Centre for Early Learning in Medicine (CELM) in Dunedin. Her research interests lie in medical education, particularly the use of virtual environments. She co-authored several publications on the Otago Virtual Hospital project, including "In search of a method to assess dispositional behaviours: The case of Otago Virtual Hospital" (Loke, Blyth, & Swan, 2012, Australasian Journal of Educational Technology), which explores assessment methods in virtual worlds; "Otago Virtual Hospital: medical students learning to notice clinically salient features" (Blyth, Loke, & Swan, 2010); and "Student views on how role-playing in a virtual hospital is distinctively relevant to medical education" (Loke, Blyth, & Swan, 2012). These works highlight the potential of virtual worlds for experiential learning and professional development in medicine. Through these efforts, Swan has advanced innovative teaching and assessment strategies at the University of Otago.
