Dr Judy Ormandy is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (Wellington) within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Otago. She holds the qualifications MBChB, Dip Obs (Dist), FRANZCOG, and MClinEd (Hons), having graduated from Otago Medical School and completed postgraduate obstetrics and gynaecology training. Ormandy serves as convenor of the 5th year Women's Health module at the Wellington campus. As an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, her clinical interests include high risk obstetrics and maternal mental health. Her research centers on medical education, with her Master's thesis investigating interactions between medical students and midwives on the birthing suite. She explores interprofessional education for midwifery and medical students, storytelling interventions to enhance empathy in medical students regarding women's lived experiences of abnormal uterine bleeding, and community-based approaches to improve access to colposcopy services.
Ormandy has authored or co-authored several key publications, including 'Spontaneous haemoperitoneum in pregnancy complicated by a pulmonary embolus: a case report' (Case Reports in Women's Health, 2025, with M. Uluilelata), 'Developing an effective IPE learning activity for midwifery and medical students: Use of a quality improvement model and researcher-teacher partnership methodology' (Journal of Practice Teaching & Learning, 2025, with S. Morgan et al.), 'Women’s experience of participating in a storytelling intervention about abnormal uterine bleeding for medical student education' (Focus on Health Professional Education, 2024, with P. Kanagasabai et al.), and ''I was able to make a better decision about my health.' Wāhine experiences of colposcopy at a marae-based health clinic: A qualitative study' (Australian & New Zealand Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, 2024). She has presented at conferences such as the RANZCOG Aotearoa Annual Scientific Meeting (2025) on breaking down barriers to colposcopy. Ormandy received a Research For Life grant of $9,275 in 2021 and a Health Delivery Research Project Grant of $1,394,123 over 36 months in 2023 for cervical cancer prevention in community services. Her work addresses inequities in maternal care, COVID-19 vaccination uptake in pregnancy, and inclusive obstetrics curricula for transgender and non-binary individuals.
