Dr Julia Caldicott is a Senior Lecturer and Academic Lead for Work Integrated Learning (WIL) in the Faculty of Business, Law and Arts at Southern Cross University. She earned her PhD from Southern Cross University in 2020, focusing on self-authorship development in tourism education through WIL programs. Additional qualifications include a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (Teaching and Learning) from SCU, a Bachelor of Business from SCU, and a Bachelor of Nursing from La Trobe University. Recognized as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), Caldicott has been affiliated with Southern Cross University since 2006, initially as a Lecturer, advancing to her current senior role. She also serves as Faculty Lead for Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME). Her teaching responsibilities cover professional development, organisational behaviour, career development, and WIL units in business degrees. Caldicott is actively involved in professional networks, including membership on the Australian Collaborative Education Network (ACEN) National Professional Learning Committee and NSW/ACT Committee, as well as professional membership in the National Association of Graduate Careers Services (NAGCAS). She offers supervision for research projects aligned with her expertise.
Caldicott's research specializations encompass Work Integrated Learning, self-authorship development, and tourism education, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals 4 (Quality Education), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Key publications include 'Beyond employability: Work-integrated learning and self-authorship development' (2022, Journal of Hospitality, Leisure, Sport & Tourism Education, co-authored with Erica Wilson, James F. Donnelly, and Johan R. Edelheim), 'Fostering Self-Authorship Through Work Integrated Learning' (2020, Journal of Teaching in Travel & Tourism), 'Students as harsh critics: a comparison of student and industry evaluations of student performance on work placements' (2022, International Journal of Work-Integrated Learning, with Sharen Nisbet and others), 'Developing a taxonomy of "award-winning" restaurants: what are they actually?' (2011, with Johan Richard Edelheim, Y.L. Lee, and S.H. Lee), and 'The concept and relevance of ecotourism to Indigenous economic and human development in remote Australian communities' (2005, Centre for Enterprise Development and Research report, with Don Fuller). In 2025, she delivered an invited three-hour workshop at the Venice School of Management - Università Ca' Foscari Venezia on holistic career competencies for a sustainable world under the Erasmus+ grant program. Through her WIL initiatives, she fosters community engagement and student employability.
