Julie Walker, DVM, DACVECC, is Clinical Professor of Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care in the Department of Medical Sciences at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine. She earned her BS from Juniata College in 2004 and DVM from Michigan State University in 2008. She completed a small animal rotating internship from 2008 to 2009 and a residency in small animal emergency and critical care from 2009 to 2012 at North Carolina State University, becoming a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in 2012. Walker joined the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2012 as Clinical Assistant Professor of Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care, advancing to Clinical Associate Professor in 2018 and Clinical Professor in 2025.
Dr. Walker's research interests include optimization of blood product collection, storage, and administration, management of pleural space disease, viscoelastic tests of coagulation, blood banking, and transfusion medicine. Key publications comprise Hall GBF et al., 'A prospective multicenter observational study assessing acute blood transfusion reaction incidence and risk factors in dogs' (Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, 2024); Lathroum CN et al., 'The use of injectable subcutaneous terbutaline and topical 2% nitroglycerin ointment in the treatment of peripheral vasopressor extravasation in 3 dogs' (Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, 2024); Lemburg BK and Walker JM, 'Case Report: Fenestrated over-the-needle catheter fracture during thoracocentesis in a cat' (Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery: Open Reports, 2024); and contributions to the Manual of Veterinary Transfusion Medicine and Blood Banking. She holds leadership positions including Chief of Small Animal Services (2021-present), Small Animal Blood Bank Director (2015-present), Section Head of Emergency and Critical Care (2015-2018), and Rotating Internship Program Co-Director. Walker serves on the ACVECC Examination Committee (co-chair since 2020), Curriculum Review Committee (2019-present), and Infection Control Committee (2014-present), and is Director of the Association of Veterinary Hematology and Transfusion Medicine (board member since 2019). She delivers 15-20 hours of lectures and 30-50 hours of laboratory instruction annually, mentors trainees, provides continuing education at conferences such as IVECCS and ACVIM, reviews manuscripts for journals including JVIM and JVECC, and received three nominations for the Zoetis Teaching Award (2015-2017).
