Katepalli R. Sreenivasan is a University Professor at New York University with appointments in the Tandon School of Engineering, Department of Physics, and Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. He holds the Eugene Kleiner Chair for Innovation in Mechanical Engineering and serves as Executive Vice Provost for Engineering and Applied Sciences. From 2013 to 2018, he was Dean of the NYU Tandon School of Engineering and previously President of the Polytechnic Institute of NYU, overseeing its merger with NYU. Earlier roles include Director of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy (2003-2009), Distinguished University Professor and Director of the Institute for Physical Science and Technology at the University of Maryland, and at Yale University (1979-2002) as Harold W. Cheel Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department, and faculty in physics, applied physics, and mathematics. He directs the Center for Space Science at NYU Abu Dhabi. Sreenivasan earned a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering from Bangalore University (1968), M.E. and Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science (1970, 1975), and honorary degrees including D.Sc. from Lucknow University (2006), University of Hyderabad (2007), and Romanian Academy (2008).
His research focuses on fluid mechanics and turbulence, statistical and nonlinear physics, complex fluids, nonlinear dynamics, nonequilibrium phenomena, and applied mathematics. Notable publications include 'The phenomenology of small-scale turbulence' (Annual Review of Fluid Mechanics, 1997, with R.A. Antonia), 'Simple multifractal cascade model for fully developed turbulence' (Physical Review Letters, 1987, with C. Meneveau), 'The multifractal nature of turbulent energy dissipation' (Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1991, with C. Meneveau), and 'On the universality of the Kolmogorov constant' (Physics of Fluids, 1995). Sreenivasan has received the Leo P. Kadanoff Prize (American Physical Society, 2022), ASME Medal (2022), von Kármán Medal (American Society of Civil Engineers, 2020), Fluid Dynamics Prize (APS, 2020), Otto Laporte Memorial Award (APS, 1995), Guggenheim Fellowship, and election to the National Academy of Sciences (2007) and National Academy of Engineering. His contributions have significantly advanced the understanding of turbulent flows and their applications across engineering and physics.
