Kara Whaley holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDipEd), both from the University of Waikato. She commenced her career in education as a Year 8 teacher at Dunedin North Intermediate School, where she contributed to student engagement through activities such as chemistry demonstrations highlighted on Radio New Zealand's Our Changing World programme in 2013. Her experience in secondary teaching provided a strong foundation in pastoral care and educational support, skills she now applies in higher education.
Appointed Tautiaki (Warden) of Te Rangihīroa College in 2023 within the University of Otago's Campus and Collegiate Life Services division, Kara Whaley has led the newest residential college since its practical completion that year. The 450-bed, 5-Star Greenstar facility at 15 Forth Street, Dunedin, welcomed its first residents in February 2024 following a Whakawātea opening ceremony blessed by Ngāti Mutunga. Responsible for all aspects of college management, including administration, resident welfare, pastoral care, and crisis response, she lives onsite to support the community. Under her leadership, Te Rangihīroa has fostered manaaki and aroha, with residents describing it as a home away from home emphasizing whanaungatanga, academic tutorials, cultural acceptance, and personal growth. Achievements include strong inter-college competition results—second in Cultural and third in Games in 2025—significant sustainability progress, peer awards for resilient students, and successful collaborations with the Pacific Islands Centre for events supporting Pacific tauira. Resident testimonials praise the supportive environment, late-night study sessions, and vibrant social calendar. Kara Whaley also participates in university committees like the Quality Assurance Unit Recreation Services.
