Dr. Kareema Gray is an accomplished educator and scholar in social work, serving as Associate Professor of Social Work, Co-Chair of the Department of Social Work, and Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Program Director at Johnson C. Smith University in the College of Business and Professional Studies, Charlotte, North Carolina. She earned a BA in Biology from Lafayette College, Easton, Pennsylvania in 1994, followed by an MSW and PhD in Social Work from The University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia. Dr. Gray also works as a clinical medical social worker at Atrium Health, applying practical experience to her academic roles.
Dr. Gray's areas of expertise include social work, cultural competence, social policy, poverty, healthcare, social justice, and social work in sports. Her research interests center on the effectiveness of community initiatives to alleviate poverty, international disaster case management and disaster response, social work in sports, and social justice and social advocacy issues. Key publications feature 'Give Yourself Permission to Rest' co-authored with Latoya B. Brooks (Genealogy, 2021), addressing self-care, and work on healing narratives as political resistance during COVID-19. She contributes to community efforts as a Board of Trustees member at The Agnes Irwin School, Rosemont, Pennsylvania, her alma mater, and executive board member of Dedication 2 Communities in Charlotte, North Carolina, which improves community-law enforcement relations.
