Kareen Carter is the Health Sciences Librarian at the University of Otago's Wellington campus, where she also manages the Wellington Medical and Health Sciences Library. This library serves as both a campus facility for the university and a clinical library for the Capital & Coast District Health Board. Her work supports students, researchers, and staff in the Division of Health Sciences by providing access to health information resources, interlibrary loans, and reference services. In her professional contributions, Carter participated in the LIANZA Evaluation and Impact programme during 2020/21. For this programme, she focused on envisioning future library services and surveyed District Health Board library managers to gather insights on the evolving role of health libraries amid sector changes, including the Health and Disability System Review. She published her findings and overview in the article titled "The future of health libraries in New Zealand" in the Journal of Health Information and Libraries Australasia (JoHILA) in 2021. Carter has been active in the library community, presenting her work on the future of health libraries at the LIANZA conference in 2021. At the Te Upoko o te Ika a Maui Library Assistant Day 2022, she shared her career path, noting that she began her career as a library assistant. She engaged in international collaboration through a benchmarking workshop for health libraries in Dublin in 2017, aiming to measure impact and value. Carter contributed to the University of Otago's GLAM initiative with Wikipedia, focusing on the Division of Health Sciences history and resources. She holds the position of IFLA Representative for LIANZA, as noted in their 2022 annual report. Additionally, Carter has provided library impact statements for university paper proposals and participated in campus events such as the unveiling of new study spaces with murals in 2024 and the Otago Medical School 150th anniversary in 2025.
