About Karim

Karim Khan is a Professor of Economics and Dean (Academics) at the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE), Islamabad. Holding a PhD in Economics from the University of Siena, Italy (2013), an MPhil from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad (2005), and an MA and BA from the University of Peshawar (2002), he has built a distinguished career spanning over two decades primarily at PIDE. Starting as a Staff Economist in 2003, he advanced to Assistant Professor in 2014, Associate Professor in 2018, and Professor. Khan has also served as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences since February 2025, Director of the Office of Research, Innovation, and Commercialization (ORIC) from October 2024 to February 2025, Head of the Department of Economics on multiple occasions between 2019 and 2021, and Head of the Research Section on Governance and Institutions since 2018. Earlier, he lectured at the University of Malakand in 2002-2003.

His research focuses on microeconomics, political economy, institutional economics, experimental economics, economics of conflict, econometrics, growth theory, and development economics, with extensive work on trade, migration, governance, institutions, conflict, and political economy. Khan has published numerous articles in national and international journals, including “Political Empowerment and Local Governance: Evidence from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Local Government Act 2013” with Muhammad Rauf (Journal of Political Stability Archive, 2025), “Violent Conflict and Informal Institutions: Evidence from a Civil Conflict in Pakistan” with Muhsin Ali (The Pakistan Development Review, 2023), “Remittances and Health Care Expenditure: Evidence from Pakistan” with Muhammad Jehangir Khan and Abid Hussain (The Pakistan Development Review, 2021), “Volatility in Discretionary Public Spending and Economic Growth: A Cross Country Analysis” with Muhsin Ali (The Pakistan Development Review, 2020), and “Dictatorships, Patronage and Public Good Provision: Some Empirics” with Anwar Shah (The Pakistan Development Review, 2019). He collaborates with international organizations such as the World Bank, ILO, ADB, UNDP, UNIDO, and WTO, and contributes policy insights through publications in national dailies.
