Kate Barnewall is a Lecturer in Nursing at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Griffith Health, Griffith University, where she has held the position since July 2014. She currently serves as the Third Year Coordinator for the Bachelor of Nursing program and has previously acted as Professional Practice Coordinator. Her professional qualifications include Registered Nurse (RN), Registered Midwife (RM), Bachelor of Nursing (BN), Graduate Certificate in Health Professional Education (GCertHProfEd), and Master of Advanced Practice (MAdvPrac). Based at the Logan campus and Health Sciences building, she contributes to undergraduate nursing education through teaching and coordination of clinical practice components.
Barnewall's research contributions center on nursing education and clinical training, with a focus on innovative placement opportunities and professional development. She co-authored the 2017 study 'Student nurses' perceptions of clinical placements in Australian Prison Health Services: A mixed methods study' published in Nurse Education Today, examining second- and third-year students' experiences in metropolitan prison settings as part of Griffith University's placement initiative started in 2014. This work, cited 24 times, highlighted the educational value and challenges of such placements. In 2022, she contributed to 'Development and psychometric testing of the gender misconceptions in nursing scale' in Contemporary Nurse, a collaborative effort developing a tool to assess gender-related misconceptions among nurses, cited 13 times. Other publications include 'An evaluation by clinical facilitators and academic staff of a nursing student clinical assessment tool during prison placements' (2019, Collegian), explorations of preparation for clinical placements in the Australasian Journal of Clinical Education (circa 2019), preceptors' perceptions in prison health services, and an educational initiative supporting UAE nursing graduates' transition to practice. Her scholarship supports enhanced clinical education and addresses specific contextual needs in nursing practice. She is involved in courses such as Professional Experience Capstone (3808NRS) and others in the nursing curriculum.
