Katharina Näswall is Professor of Organisational Psychology in the School of Psychology, Speech and Hearing within the Faculty of Science at the University of Canterbury. She obtained her PhD in Psychology from Stockholm University in 2004, with her thesis entitled 'Job insecurity from a stress perspective: antecedents, consequences, and moderators'. After completing her doctorate, she joined the staff at Stockholm University. In December 2010, she relocated to New Zealand and commenced her position at the University of Canterbury, progressing to full professor. She serves as Director of the Masters in Organisational Psychology programme and co-leads the Workplace Analytics Research group alongside Professor Sanna Malinen. Additionally, she is affiliated with the Centre for Good Work.
Näswall's research focuses on employee well-being, the creation of psychologically healthy workplaces that enhance performance, job insecurity, organisational resilience, psychological safety, burnout, hybrid work arrangements, and psychosocial recovery following disasters. She collaborates with organisations to diagnose stress and well-being issues and to implement evidence-based initiatives drawing on psychological principles related to human behaviour and emotions. Her scholarly contributions include editorial roles on the boards of the Scandinavian Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology and Work and Stress. Notable publications encompass 'No security: a meta-analysis and review of job insecurity and its consequences' (2002, Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, with Magnus Sverke and Johnny Hellgren), 'Who Feels Insecure in Europe? Predicting Job Insecurity from Background Variables' (2003, Economic and Industrial Democracy, with Hans De Witte), 'The moderating role of personality characteristics on the relationship between job insecurity and strain' (2005, Work & Stress), and 'Resilient Employees in Resilient Organizations: Flourishing Beyond Adversity' (2016, Industrial and Organizational Psychology, with Joana R. C. Kuntz and Sanna Malinen). She has delivered public lectures on mental health and well-being through work and teaches courses in industrial and organisational psychology, including edX MOOCs such as 'Performance and Motivation at Work' and 'Recruiting and Selecting the Right Person'.
