Katherine Gaschk is associated with Murdoch University's School of Education, where she served as a PhD student from 2012 to 2022 on the research project 'How Do You Separate Waste?'. In this longitudinal case study, she explored the barriers and motivators influencing correct household waste separation behaviors among Australian householders. She completed her Professional Doctorate from Murdoch University in 2022, with the thesis titled 'A multidisciplinary exploration of the household waste separation behaviours of Australian householders: a longitudinal case study.' The doctoral work was supervised by Professor Jennifer Verduin and Catherine Baudains, contributing insights into environmental education and sustainability practices at the household level. Gaschk's research aligns with broader efforts in waste management education, as evidenced by her earlier identification as a Research Masters candidate focusing on waste management.
At Murdoch University, Gaschk has contributed to teaching efforts, including delivering the lecture on Solid Waste Management in the ENV102 Foundations of the Environment unit in 2023. She co-presented on community education challenges and triumphs at the 34th Annual Research Forum of the West Australian Institute for Educational Research (WAIER) in 2019 with Catherine Baudains. Gaschk has been involved in environmental education initiatives, such as the Feast of Science sense-ations event and contributions to the Australian Association for Environmental Education (AAEE) WA branch, including the Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group. She provided expert commentary in media, including ABC News in 2018 on public confusion regarding recycling practices and support for bans on single-use plastics like straws and bags. Her work underscores practical applications of environmental education for sustainability.
