Dr. Katy Everett serves as Associate Professor of Environmental Science, Division Chair of Science and Mathematics, and Associate Provost at Eureka College. She earned a PhD in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation from the University of Florida in 2011, with doctoral research focused on sea turtle conservation in Caribbean Nicaragua, where she lived for nearly a year. Her academic background also includes an MA in Leadership from Brexgata University Academy in 2006 and a BS in Biology from Marquette University in 2001. Everett's research interests center on the social dimensions of natural resource conservation and sustainable practices, including cultural connections, traditional livelihoods, and food preferences. She holds certifications in Tropical Conservation and Development, Environmental Education and Communication from the University of Florida, and is a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver.
Since joining Eureka College in 2016, Everett has progressed from Assistant Professor and Director of Sustainability to her current administrative and academic leadership roles. She chairs the Eureka College Sustainability Committee, advises the Student Alliance for Greener Environments (SAGE), and serves as Secretary and Stewardship Chair on the ParkLands Foundation Board of Trustees. In 2022, she received the Helen Cleaver Distinguished Teaching Award for excellence, creativity, and innovation in teaching. Her courses emphasize local ecosystems, native landscapes, small farms, local food systems, and sustainability. Notable publications include Garland, K.A. and R.R. Carthy. 2010. Changing Taste Preferences, Market Demands and Traditions in Pearl Lagoon, Nicaragua: A Community Reliant on Green Turtles for Income and Nutrition. Conservation and Society 8(1): 55-72; Ban, E. et al. 2005. Nonpoint Source Pollution: Education Module; and Pendergraft, B. (Producer) and K.A. Garland (Director). 2005. Journey of the Loggerhead: An Interactive DVD on Marine Turtles. She has secured grants from Trees Forever for on-campus natural areas, helped achieve Tree Campus Higher Education designation, and facilitated student internships at sites including the USDA Ag Lab, The Nature Conservancy, ParkLands Foundation, and local organic farms.
