She holds an Associate Diploma in Diagnostic Medical Radiography from Sydney College of Technical and Further Education (1988), a Diploma of Health Science (Medical Imaging) from Charles Sturt University (1992), a Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Imaging) from Charles Sturt University (1995), a PhD in Medical Radiation Science from the University of Sydney (2011), and a Graduate Certificate in University Learning and Teaching from Charles Sturt University (2015). Her professional career commenced with training at Westmead and Manly District Hospitals in Sydney, followed by private practice in regional New South Wales. She began part-time teaching at Charles Sturt University in 2002, moving to full-time academia in 2008. Previously, she was Head of Program for medical imaging and medical sonography at Central Queensland University. Currently, she serves as Associate Head of School (Medical Radiation Science and Pharmacy), Head of Discipline (Medical Radiation Science), and Associate Professor in Medical Imaging within the School of Dentistry and Medical Sciences, Faculty of Science and Health, Charles Sturt University, at the Wagga Wagga campus.
Spurr's research specialisations encompass mammographic image quality and evaluation systems, mammography positioning techniques and training, quality assurance in breast imaging, visual grading analysis, cone beam breast computed tomography, and computed tomography dose optimisation and image quality. She supervises higher degree research students, including PhD projects on mammography positioning impacts on image quality and patient off-centring in CT imaging. Notable publications include 'ChatGPT in medical imaging higher education' (2023), 'The influence of patient positioning on radiation dose in CT imaging: A narrative review' (2022), 'A review of mammographic image quality in Papua New Guinea' (2021), 'The impacts of vertical off-centring, tube voltage, and phantom size on computed tomography numbers: An experimental study' (2022), 'From classroom to global impact: How radiography education advances the sustainable development goals' (2024), and 'Effectiveness of ChatGPT-4o in developing continuing professional development plans for graduate radiographers' (2024). She was awarded Fellowship of the Australian Society of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy in 2016, along with shared recognitions for the most cited and most downloaded article in 2023.
