Dr. Ken Doust is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Southern Cross University. He earned his PhD and Master of Engineering from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), a Graduate Diploma in Engineering from the University of Wollongong (UOW), and a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours from the New South Wales Institute of Technology (NSWIT). Between 2016 and 2021, he served as Course Coordinator for the Engineering Management program at Southern Cross University, overseeing its postgraduate curriculum and expansion to the Gold Coast campus. With over 40 years of professional experience in the transport sector, particularly NSW railway infrastructure, Dr. Doust has held key roles in engineering, maintenance, asset management, regional infrastructure planning, and strategic planning at City Rail and in the private sector. He possesses broad corporate knowledge of the NSW rail portfolio and has actively engaged with communities in the Northern Rivers, Sydney, and South Coast regions of NSW.
Dr. Doust's research specializations include sustainability via holistic systems thinking and knowledge sharing, infrastructure re-engineering to support emerging industries and rejuvenate local economies, sustainable communities, climate change adaptation and transition, engineering management, energy farming, and agritech. He is Co-Director of the Urban Climate Change Research Network Australia Oceania Hub, Director of Windana Research Pty Ltd, and a senior visiting fellow at the UNSW Research Centre for Integrated Transport Innovation. In 2017, he collaborated with Aalborg University on planning and engineering courses for future communities, facilitated the UCCRN Hub launch through a symposium at SCU campuses, and led initial development of the National Centre for Flood Research. Recently, he assisted Northern Rivers producers in supply chain strategy development and oversaw climate change response workshops. Key publications encompass 'Towards a typology for coastal towns and small cities for climate change adaptation planning' (2021), 'Front-end construction waste minimization strategies' (2021), 'Adaptation to climate change in coastal towns of between 10,000 and 50,000 inhabitants' (2021), 'A holistic assessment framework for urban development and transportation with innovative triple bottom line sustainability metrics' (2009), and 'From roots to routes: A ground up approach to freight and supply chain strategy development' (2019). He supervises Master by Research students and teaches to empower professionals in building sustainable communities.
