Dr. Kerreen Ely-Harper is a Senior Lecturer in Screen Arts and Discipline Lead for Screen Arts in the School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry, Faculty of Humanities at Curtin University. She holds a Doctor of Media, Music and Cultural Studies from Macquarie University, completed in 2014, and previously taught screenwriting there. Her research specializations encompass screen production, screenwriting, and memory narratives. As a creative media researcher and filmmaker with over 30 years in the Australian screen industry, she lectures in screenwriting and production, supervises higher degree research, and contributes to innovative projects including those at the Curtin HIVE.
Ely-Harper's key publications include "Making Room for Ghosts: Memory, History and Family Biography on Film" (Cultural Studies Review, 2014), "Covid-19's Impact on Teaching, Learning and Creativity in 2020" (2021, co-authored with Clare Toonen), "Writing/performing myself on-screen: Daniel Monks' memory work on film" (2021), "Inclusivity from the start? Evaluating the accessibility of FilmFreeway festival submission webpages" (2025, co-authored with Anna Debinski and Breeanna Melville), "Reflective practice: an integrative review of collaborations between artists and healthcare professionals" (2025), and "reimagining 2D production workflows for virtual reality (VR)" (2026). She has written and directed documentaries and short films such as "Close to the Bone" (hour-long documentary, Spirited Films, Screen Australia, Curtin University), "Girls Can Do Anything" (2018, Best Short Film at Spiritus Film Festival, 2020), "In Her Own Words" (ATOM Award winner for Best Education Resource, 1997), "Even Girls Play Footy" (ATOM nomination, 2012), and "Parts of a Horse" (ATOM nomination for Best Short Film, 2003). Additional works include the virtual 3D adaptation "Foul Whisperings, Strange Matters" (2008-2010). Her contributions extend to symposia, Indigenous creativity showcases, and accessibility initiatives, influencing screen education and practice.
