Kerry Redican, MSPH, MPH, PhD, was Professor of Public Health in the Department of Population Health Sciences, Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech. He earned his PhD from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Redican joined Virginia Tech in 1981 within the former College of Education, where he developed the community health education program and the Master of Science in Community Health, Virginia Tech's first public health-type degree. He contributed to the Master of Science in Health Promotion, delivered through pioneering distance learning methods including broadcast technology and online formats. In 2010, after nearly three decades in other roles, he transitioned to the College of Veterinary Medicine as director of the undergraduate public health program. Under his leadership, the Bachelor of Science in Public Health launched in fall 2018, attracting approximately 400 majors and 150 minors, and he taught undergraduate and graduate courses in public health topics.
Over his 44-year tenure ending in retirement in 2026, Redican demonstrated exceptional service, serving three terms as Faculty Senate president, including 1998-1999, and numerous department, college, and university committees. Appointed to the Academy of Faculty Service Members in 1996, he received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning and was inducted into the Delta Omega Honorary Society, Delta Mu Chapter, as faculty in 2019. His academic interests included public health policy and administration, comparative health care and public health systems, and health education program development. Redican co-authored five textbooks, including multiple editions of iHealth, and authored more than 70 publications in health journals. He served as associate editor for one journal and contributing editor for another, significantly influencing public health education at Virginia Tech from early community health initiatives to accredited MPH and BSPH programs.
