Kevin Oliver is a professor specializing in Learning, Design, and Technology within the field of Education. He currently serves as Professor and Head of the Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences in the College of Education at North Carolina State University, a position he has held since 2005. Prior to this, from 1999 to 2002, he worked at Virginia Tech as an Instructional Designer and Evaluator in the Educational Technologies division and as an Adjunct Assistant Professor with the Department of Teaching and Learning. His academic journey began with a B.S. from the University of Tennessee in 1990, followed by an M.Ed. in Educational Media and Instructional Design from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and culminated in a Ph.D. in Instructional Technology from the University of Georgia in 1999. At Virginia Tech, Oliver contributed to significant initiatives, including serving as co-PI on an NSF-funded Digital Library Network for Engineering and Technology (DLNET) project and presenting on recommendations for student tools in online course delivery environments.
Oliver's research focuses on instructional technology and design, distance education, constructivist learning environments, and online learning tools. His influential publications include 'Open learning environments: Foundations, methods, and models' (1999, co-authored with Michael Hannafin and Susan Land), which explores foundations and models for open learning; 'Student-centered learning environments: Foundations, assumptions and design' (2012); 'Grounded practice and the design of constructivist learning environments' (1997); 'Methods for developing constructivist learning on the web' (2000); and 'A social network perspective on peer supported learning in MOOCs for educators' (2014). These works have advanced the understanding and implementation of student-centered and technology-enhanced pedagogies in teacher education and beyond. Additional contributions include studies on web-based concept mapping tasks for alternative assessment in distance teacher education and faculty recommendations for web tools in course management systems. His scholarship continues to impact the design of effective online and blended learning experiences.
