About Kevin

Professor Kevin Pimbblet serves as Head of the School of Digital and Physical Sciences and Professor of Astrophysics in the Physical Sciences at the University of Hull. He is an accomplished British-Australian observational astronomer and applied data scientist with experience across multiple research-intensive institutions on two continents. Pimbblet earned a BSc (Hons) and PhD from the University of Durham at Collingwood College. Following postdoctoral work, he spent over a decade in Australia, holding positions at the University of Queensland and Monash University School of Physics. He returned to the UK in 2014 to join the University of Hull, where he became the inaugural Director of the Centre of Excellence for Data Science, AI and Modelling (DAIM).

His research focuses on extra-galactic astronomy, astrophysics, cosmology, the large-scale structure of the Universe, galaxy evolution, active galactic nuclei, and the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence to astronomical datasets. With more than 22,700 citations on Google Scholar, Pimbblet's contributions have had substantial impact, particularly through involvement in large surveys like Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA). Notable publications include 'Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA): the GAMA galaxy group catalogue' (Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia, 2011), 'Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA): Data Release 4 and the z < 0.1 total and z < 0.08 morphological galaxy stellar mass functions' (2023), and 'Can ChatGPT pass a physics degree? Making a case for synthetic data in AI benchmarking' (arXiv, 2024). He has received teaching awards such as the National Australian Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning (2012) and Monash University's Vice-Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Honours Supervision (2012). Pimbblet delivered his inaugural lecture, 'The Evolution of Galaxies,' at the University of Hull in May 2025, exploring galaxy evolution, black holes, and cosmology.
