Associate Professor Kieran Murray serves as Associate Professor of Medicine in the School of Medicine at the University of Limerick since his appointment in 2024. Concurrently, he holds the position of Consultant in Rheumatology and General Internal Medicine with the University of Limerick Hospitals Group. Murray graduated with Honours in Medicine from University College Dublin in 2010. He completed Basic Specialist Training in 2013 and Higher Specialist Training in Rheumatology in 2020, undertaking training in Dublin, Perth, and Galway. Additionally, he completed an Advanced Clinical Fellowship in Musculoskeletal Ultrasound and Early Arthritis at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle. His qualifications include Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (MRCPI), a Master’s degree in Sports and Exercise Medicine from University College Cork with a thesis on alcohol use among intercounty GAA players, and a PhD from St Vincent’s University Hospital/University College Dublin focused on outcomes in rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis.
In clinical practice, Murray has founded an Early Arthritis Clinic utilizing Point of Care Ultrasound and a Rheumatology Obstetric Service with a monthly clinic at University Maternity Hospital Limerick. His research specializations include musculoskeletal ultrasound for arthritis diagnosis and management, assessment of early inflammatory arthritis, reproductive health in rheumatic diseases, and multidisciplinary approaches to rheumatic conditions. He supervises PhD students at the University of Limerick and has contributed to medical education as a previous tutor at University College Dublin. Murray has delivered public lectures, including on paediatric rheumatology topics at University of Limerick events. Key publications encompass 'Assessment of gambling perspectives amongst elite Irish athletes' (2024), 'Factors that influence school attendance and participation in children and adolescents with juvenile idiopathic arthritis' (2025), 'Long-term remission and biologic persistence rates' comparing psoriatic arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis (2021), and 'A multidisciplinary approach to reproductive healthcare in rheumatic diseases' (2020). His work has appeared in leading international journals such as Pediatric Rheumatology, Rheumatology, and PubMed-indexed publications.
