Kimberly Deaton serves as an associate professor in the Richard and Lucille DeWitt School of Nursing at Stephen F. Austin State University, within the College of Sciences and Mathematics. She earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Nursing from Chamberlain School of Nursing in Downers Grove, Illinois, in 2017; Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi in 2012; and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, in 2006. Deaton holds certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-C) from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners since 2012, with expiration in 2027, and maintains active licensures as a Registered Nurse (RN) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with the Texas Board of Nursing through 2025. She also possesses certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) from the American Heart Association, along with Online Instructor Certification obtained in 2017.
Deaton began her academic career at Stephen F. Austin State University as a clinical instructor in the DeWitt School of Nursing from 2015 to 2017 before advancing to assistant professor in 2018, with recent recognition as associate professor. Her clinical practice as a Family Nurse Practitioner since 2012 includes roles at Envision/Emcare in Lufkin providing emergency care for patients from 3 months and up, Medpost Urgent Care in Nacogdoches, East Texas Nephrology Associates CKD clinic, Urgent Doc Urgent Care, and The Institute of Lifestyle Prevention and Family Medicine, as well as prior staff nursing in emergency rooms at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital and Memorial Health Systems East Texas, where she served as stroke program coordinator. In teaching, she coordinates and instructs graduate FNP core courses such as NURS 5342 Diagnostics and Procedures, NURS 5551 Primary Care I, NURS 5670 MSN FNP-Capstone, and NURS 5332 Advanced Health Assessment, alongside undergraduate courses including NURS 3630 Nursing Care Young Adult to Elderly and NUR 3207L Assessment Across the Lifespan. Deaton presented on Improving Depression Screening in CKD at the National Symposium for Nurse Practitioners in Keystone, Colorado, in 2018 and at SFA faculty development. She contributes to university service on the Faculty Leave and Development Committee and College Council, serves as Pre-Nursing Advisor and Resident Life Community Advisor, and participates in departmental committees including MSN Ad Hoc, Student Affairs Ad Hoc, Evaluations, Simulation, Policy and Procedure, Recruitment, and Testing. Professional memberships include the American Nurse Practitioner Association, Texas Nurse Practitioner Association, and Texas League of Nursing. Community involvement encompasses Social Media Director for Pineywoods Providers since 2015 and COVID Call Center volunteer in 2020.
