Kirsi Niinimäki is Professor (full) in Design, especially Fashion Research in the Department of Design at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture, where she leads the Fashion/Textiles Futures research group. She earned her Doctor of Arts degree from Aalto University on 19 December 2011 with the dissertation "From Disposable to Sustainable: The Complex Interplay between Design and Consumption of Textiles and Clothing." Before becoming a researcher, she had a long career as a teacher. Her research aims at a holistic understanding of sustainable fashion and textiles, emphasizing connections between design, manufacturing systems, business models, and consumption habits. Central themes encompass circular economy, strategic design, design practices, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Niinimäki's scholarly impact is evident in key publications such as her edited volume "Sustainable Fashion in a Circular Economy" (Aalto ARTS Books, 2018), the highly cited paper "Eco-clothing, consumer identity and ideology" (2010), and "Ethical Foundations in Sustainable Fashion" (2015).
