Dr. Korey A. Kennelty, PharmD, MS, PhD, BCGP, is the Patrick E. Keefe Professor in Pharmacy and an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. She also holds an appointment as Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine in the Carver College of Medicine, where she serves as Vice Chair for Research and Implementation Science and Director of the Iowa Research Network (IRENE). Her clinical practice is as a geriatrics pharmacist at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, specifically at the Iowa River Landing location in Coralville. Kennelty earned her B.B.A. in 2001 from the University of Toledo, Pharm.D. in 2008 from Midwestern University-Glendale, M.S. in 2010 and Ph.D. in 2013 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and completed a three-year Advanced Fellowship in geriatrics and implementation science in 2016 at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital. Earlier honors include Beta Gamma Sigma Honorary Business Fraternity from the University of Toledo and Chemistry Student-of-the-Year Award from Lorain County Community College.
Kennelty's research focuses on transitions of care, chronic care management, and team-based care, with additional interests in telehealth, rural health, women's health, cancer, and mental health. As an implementation scientist and clinical trialist, she is nationally recognized for improving medication use and quality of care for older adults, particularly through team-based interventions in primary care settings. She has collaborated with over 150 primary-care practices on clinical trials and secured major funding, including a $17.9 million award with Carri Casteel for a hypertension management study in older adults with multiple chronic diseases. Key publications include 'Leveraging the Clinical Translational Science Award Network to Advance Family Medicine Research' (2025, J Am Board Fam Med), 'A clinical trial evaluating pharmacist-guided self-management of hypertension among veterans with CKD' (2025, Contemp Clin Trials), and 'Practical naloxone communication tips for pharmacists' (2025, Res Social Adm Pharm). Recent presentations cover pharmacist discharge care and rural physician-based practice research networks.
