Krassimir Marchev serves as Professor of the Practice and Lead Director for the Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Technology Programs in Northeastern University’s College of Professional Studies, a position he has held since July 2017. He has been a part-time faculty member at the same institution since 1991, teaching courses in chemistry, materials science, and advanced manufacturing both on-campus and online. Marchev earned his Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Solid State Chemistry and Materials Science from Northeastern University in 1994, with a thesis on processing, characterization, and kinetics of plasma nitrided stainless steels under Prof. Bill Giessen. He previously obtained a Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering from Warsaw University of Technology in 1984, graduating with honors. His extensive industry experience includes serving as Technical Team Leader and Senior Scientist at The Gillette Company from 2000 to 2012, where he led the development and patenting of the blade edge for the Gillette Fusion ProGlide razor, contributing to a billion-dollar product line. He also developed surface engineering technologies for Pratt & Whitney and Sikorsky aircraft, worked at Norton Diamond Film on diamond deposition processes, and held leadership roles at OptoGlo Inc. and Milara Inc., focusing on innovation in nano-technologies and robotics.
Marchev’s research specializations encompass advanced manufacturing, nano-technologies, materials science, surface engineering, plasma technologies, robotics, and automation. He has authored numerous publications, including “Observation of a Compound Layer with Very Low Friction Coefficient in Ion Nitrided Martensitic 410 Stainless Steel” (1998, Surface and Coatings Technology), “Conditions for the Formation of a Martensitic Single-Phase Compound Layer in Ion Nitrided 316L Austenitic Stainless Steel” (1998), and recent works on nanostructured multilayer coatings such as “Duplex Surface Modification of 40CrMnMo7 Tool Steel by Chemical-Thermal Treatment and PVD Coating” (2026). His work has garnered hundreds of citations and resulted in patents on materials, technologies, and products with collaborators including Northeastern University, Gillette, Procter & Gamble, and Sikorsky. Marchev edited six volumes on “Metallurgical Coatings and Thin Films” for Elsevier’s ICMCTF conferences. As Chair of the Executive Committee of ASM International Boston Chapter, he facilitates professional development opportunities for students through free memberships and industry events. He has contributed to NSF-funded projects and was featured on the cover of Northeastern University magazine in 1998.
