Kristen Radsliff Rebmann is a Professor in the School of Information at San José State University. She joined the faculty in 2007 following the completion of her Ph.D. in Communication from the University of California, San Diego, where her dissertation examined design interventions to foster critical multiliteracies among children in community-based informal learning settings. Rebmann holds a Master of Library and Information Science (2000) and a Bachelor of Science in Biology (1997). Before pursuing her doctorate, she served as an academic librarian specializing in web design and instructional technology. Her research investigates the intersections of various literacies, technology, and human development, with current emphases on deploying emerging information technologies to enhance digital inclusion and resiliency, equity-focused data analytics in libraries, and learning design that advances excellence in distance education alongside justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Rebmann's extensive research interests encompass academic libraries, community information centers, critical perspectives on library and information science, data analytics and informatics, eLearning, information literacy and instruction, information policy, instructional design and technology, pedagogy in library and information science, public libraries, reading and literacy, research methods, scholarly communication, school media centers, science and technology literatures, serving diverse populations including the disabled, multicultural communities, and the aged, storytelling, technology integration, and young adult services.
Rebmann has made significant contributions through funded projects, including leading a $249,882 Institute of Museum and Library Services National Leadership Grant (2018-2020) to deploy TV White Spaces networks for improved internet access and equity in New Mexico Tribal Libraries, in collaboration with partners from the New Mexico State Library, Department of Information Technology, Gigabit Libraries Network, and UC Santa Barbara. Her scholarly output includes 'Equity-focused Data Analytics for Libraries' (2022), 'TV White Spaces in Public Libraries: A Primer' (2017, with Donald Means and Emmanuel Te), 'Supporting open information literacy via hybridised design experiments' (2018), and 'Letter from the Editor' in the iSchool Student Research Journal (2023). She has received numerous iSchool accolades: Outstanding Professor (2023, 2013), Distinguished Scholar (2018), and Distinguished Service Award (2012). Rebmann has presented in the SJSU University Scholar Series on equity-focused data analytics and served on the University Faculty Senate Program Planning Committee (2017-2018). Her interdisciplinary work, drawing from library and information science, communication, and education, promotes transformative literacy environments and digital equity for underserved communities.
