Kristin Heumann, PhD, serves as Professor of Kinesiology and Assistant Academic Department Head for Kinesiology at Colorado Mesa University, a position she has held since August 2011, advancing from Assistant Professor to tenured Associate Professor in 2017 and previously directing the Health and Wellness program from 2019 to 2021. In this role, she oversees the Exercise Science, Fitness & Health Promotion, and Outdoor Recreation Industry Studies programs, along with health and wellness courses and all activity courses. Prior to joining Colorado Mesa University, Heumann worked as a Teaching Associate in the Department of Exercise & Wellness at Arizona State University from 2007 to 2011, served as adjunct faculty in Physical Education, Health Science, and Exercise Science at Chandler Gilbert Community College from 2008 to 2011, and taught as a Master's Lecturer at Universidad Europea de Madrid in 2010. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education with a concentration in fitness management from Northwestern College in 2006, Master of Science in Exercise and Wellness from Arizona State University in 2008, and Doctor of Philosophy in Physical Activity, Nutrition and Wellness from Arizona State University in 2011.
Heumann's academic interests encompass the effects of exercise on bone health in children and young adult women, physical activity assessments, strength and conditioning, athletic performance, gender differences in training, health outcomes in allied health career programs, and utilization of health and wellness courses in higher education. Her scholarly contributions include peer-reviewed articles such as "Validity and Reliability of the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ)" (Measurement in Physical Education and Exercise Science, 2013), "Qualitative ultrasound comparisons between pre-pubertal normally active girls versus competitive jump rope participants" (Women in Sport and Physical Activity Journal, 2014), and "The case for altruism in institutional diagnostic testing" (Scientific Reports, 2021). She co-authored the textbook Wellness for Life (4th ed., Kendall Hunt Publishing, 2022; 3rd ed., 2015). Awards include the Gail Butterfield Award from the Southwest American College of Sports Medicine (2010) and multiple research grants from Arizona State University. Heumann holds certifications as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA-CSCS), American College of Sports Medicine Health Fitness Specialist, and Zumba Instructor. She leads as Education Recognition Program Director for NSCA's Strength and Conditioning and Personal Training programs, serves as Colorado State Director for the NSCA, and sits on the NSCA National Women's Committee. At the university, she contributes to committees including Faculty Senate Executive Committee, Commencement Committee, and various search committees.
