Kristy Walker serves as the Tutorials and Academic Pastoral Support Co-ordinator at the Pacific Islands Centre, University of Otago. In this role, she organises supplementary academic support for Pacific students, including tutorials, workshops, and targeted programmes to assist those experiencing academic difficulties or at risk of falling behind. She coordinates the Taimane programme, a structured four-part initiative designed to support first-year Pacific students throughout the academic semester, facilitating their successful transition to university studies. Additionally, Walker manages Pacific Voices, the annual postgraduate research symposium that highlights Pacific scholarship and research within the university community. The Pacific Islands Centre functions as a vital support hub, often described as a family away from home, providing comprehensive academic pastoral care and fostering a network of Pacific staff to aid students across their university journey.
Walker joined the Pacific Islands Centre immediately upon completing her undergraduate degree at the University of Otago, drawing directly from her own experiences navigating university challenges as a Pacific student. This personal background enables her to connect authentically with current tauira (students), empathising with their struggles and innovating support strategies to promote success. She collaborates closely with passionate colleagues to deliver impactful interventions. Furthermore, Kristy-Anne Walker earned a Master of Indigenous Studies (MIndS) from the University of Otago in 2025, with her thesis titled Beyond Strategy - Steps to Pacific Success. She has participated in key Pacific-focused initiatives, including the Pacific staff association gatherings, Ngā Tauira o te Kete Aronui alumni events, and contributions to Pacific student transition and outreach programmes. Her dedication underscores a commitment to enhancing Pacific student achievement at the institution.
