About Kuan
Dr. Suk Kuan Teng is a Teaching Fellow in the School of Science at Monash University Malaysia. She holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biology from Universiti Putra Malaysia, with a focus on plant nutrient contents of vermicompost derived from empty fruit bunch using Perionyx excavatus. Her Master of Science in Environmental Biology investigated the biology and cast properties of soil-dwelling earthworms from Kaki Bukit, Perlis, Malaysia. She earned her Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Biology from the same university, researching the potential role of endogeic earthworm Pontoscolex corethrurus in remediating banana blood disease. Prior to her current position, Dr. Teng served as a lecturer at the School of Foundation Studies, Xiamen University Malaysia from November 2016 to March 2023. She enjoys interacting with people, learning from them, and applying biological knowledge to everyday life while promoting sustainable living to tackle waste generation, natural resource depletion, and pollution.
Dr. Teng conducts educational research to understand learner engagement and knowledge retention, aiming to optimize learning experiences through innovative methods and diverse assessment strategies. Her other research interests include sustainable agriculture and earthworm ecology. Notable publications comprise the chapter 'Bioactive phytochemicals from rice bran oil processing by-products' (with Sook Chin Chew, Springer, 2023), 'Nanotechnologies in food microbiology: overview, recent developments, and challenges' (with Sook Chin Chew and Kai Lin Nyam, CRC Press, 2020), 'Preliminary study on the effect of endogeic earthworm on metabolic changes of blood-disease-infected banana' (Archives of Phytopathology and Plant Protection, 2019), 'Potential role of endogeic earthworm Pontoscolex corethrurus in remediating banana blood disease: a preliminary observation' (European Journal of Plant Pathology, 2016), and 'In-vitro study on the effect of endogeic earthworm on blood disease bacterium (BDB) in banana—a preliminary observation' (The Asia Journal of Applied Microbiology, 2016). Dr. Teng received the Outstanding Postgraduate Award from Universiti Putra Malaysia's Science Faculty and contributed to a team winning a Bronze Medal in 2025 for 'Developing Scientific Literacy and Skills through Targeted Workshop: A Case Study in Science Education'.
