Dr. Kwamie Dunbar serves as Interim Dean and Professor of Finance in the WPI Business School at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, a position he has held since joining the institution in 2022. He also directs the master’s in Financial Technology (FinTech) program. Dunbar earned his PhD in Financial Economics from Fordham University, MS in Mathematics from Fairfield University, MBA in Economics and Finance from Sacred Heart University, and BS from the University of the West Indies. Previously, he was Associate Professor of Finance at Simmons University’s School of Business and Associate Dean of the Welch College of Business and Technology at Sacred Heart University. With nearly a decade of industry experience, he worked with Fortune 500 companies including GE Asset Management and MasterCard Worldwide in various capacities. At WPI, he contributes to faculty search committees, graduate and undergraduate policy and curriculum development, advises student projects with corporate sponsors, and mentors the WPI student investing club.
Professor Dunbar’s research focuses on empirical asset pricing, cryptocurrencies, FinTech, futures markets, blockchain assets for social good and sustainability, decentralized finance, and the impact of environmental, social, and government policies on investment. His work has been published in prestigious journals such as International Review of Financial Analysis, Energy Economics, One Earth, Finance Research Letters, and Research in International Business and Finance. Notable publications include "Cryptocurrency returns under empirical asset pricing" (2022), "CBDC uncertainty: Financial market implications" (2023), "FinTech for environmental sustainability: Promises and pitfalls" (2024), "Hedging the extreme risk of cryptocurrency" (2022), and "Predictability of crypto returns: the impact of trading behavior" (2023). With over 20 peer-reviewed papers and more than 340 citations on Google Scholar, his scholarship has garnered significant attention. Dunbar regularly presents at international conferences, authors media pieces, serves as a manuscript reviewer, editor, or board member for over a dozen journals, and holds memberships in professional associations. He received the 2025 Provost’s MQP Award and was honored in the 2024 Trustees’ Celebration of Faculty Achievements.
