Professor Kypros Kypri was an internationally recognized expert in alcohol epidemiology and public health policy, primarily affiliated with the University of Otago's Department of Preventive and Social Medicine within the Dunedin School of Medicine. He completed his PhD in injury epidemiology at the University of Otago in 2003, after obtaining a BA with First Class Honours and training in experimental and clinical psychology at institutions including the University of New South Wales and the University of California, San Diego. His doctoral work laid the foundation for a prolific career focused on understanding and mitigating alcohol-related harms.
Throughout his tenure at Otago, Kypri advanced through academic ranks to Research Professor and contributed to the Injury Prevention Research Unit. His research included web-based interventions for hazardous drinking, patterns of alcohol use and related harms among university students, and evaluations of policy impacts on traffic crashes, assaults, and social disorder. Key publications comprise 'Web-based screening and brief intervention for hazardous drinking: a double-blind randomized controlled trial' (2004), 'Drinking and alcohol-related harm among New Zealand university students: findings from a national web-based survey' (2009), 'Randomized Controlled Trial of Proactive Web-Based Alcohol Screening and Brief Intervention for University Students' (2009), 'Long-term effects of lowering the alcohol minimum purchasing age on traffic crash injury rates in New Zealand' (2017), and 'Changes in the incidence of assault after restrictions on late-night alcohol sales' (2021). With more than 13,700 citations, his scholarship shaped alcohol control policies in New Zealand and abroad. Later at the University of Newcastle, he was Professor and Senior Brawn Research Fellow in the School of Medicine and Public Health, holding a National Health and Medical Research Council Senior Research Fellowship. Awards include the Hazelden Dan Anderson Research Award and the Sax Institute Research Action Award (2017).
