About Kysha

Kysha Harriell, Ph.D., LAT, ATC, FNAP, is a Professor of Clinical in the Department of Kinesiology and Sport Sciences within the School of Education and Human Development at the University of Miami, specializing in athletic training. She also serves as Associate Dean for Inclusive Excellence and Advocacy. Her extensive career at the University of Miami exceeds 25 years, starting as Assistant Athletic Trainer in the Department of Athletics from 1997 to 2005, followed by Adjunct Professor in Exercise and Sport Sciences from 1999 to 2005, Lecturer in the Athletic Training Program from 2005 to 2010, Clinical Education Coordinator from 2005 to 2006, Program Director of the Athletic Training Program from 2006 to 2019, Senior Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education and Executive Director of the Office of Academic Enhancement until 2023, and current roles in clinical professorship and associate deanship.

Harriell holds a Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology with a minor in Psychology from the University of Miami (2010), M.S.Ed. degrees in Sports Medicine (1999) and Sport Administration (2001) from the University of Miami, and a B.S.Ed. in Movement Science in Athletic Training with a minor in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh (1996). Her research interests encompass exercise physiology, sports medicine, athletic training, women's health, proprioception, effects of whole-body vibration on balance, yoga poses and core muscle activation, and cultural competency in healthcare addressing health issues in ethnically diverse populations. Key publications include "Variations in Verbal Encouragement Modify Isokinetic Performance" (Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 2019), "Core muscle function during specific yoga poses" (Complementary Therapies in Medicine, 2014), "Whole body periodic acceleration affects exercise-induced muscle damage after eccentric exercise" (International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance, 2014), and "Acute effects of whole-body vibration on balance in persons with and without chronic ankle instability" (Research in Sports Medicine, 2017). Among her honors are Distinguished Fellow of the National Academies of Practice in Athletic Training (2022), NATA Athletic Training Service Award (2019), Jessie Ball Distinguished Lecture Award from Kansas University Medical Center (2021), and University of Pittsburgh School of Health and Rehab Sciences Dean’s Choice Alumni Award (2020). She leads as Vice President of the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education Board of Commissioners and chairs the National Athletic Trainers Association Ethnic Diversity Advisory Committee.
