Dr. L. Emilio Morales is Senior Lecturer in Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness – Value Chains at UNE Business School, University of New England, Australia. He earned a PhD in Economics from the University of New England, a Master of Science in Agricultural Economics from Pontificia Universidad Católica in Chile, and an AgEng degree. Morales received the 2018 Award for Teaching and Learning Innovation from UNE Business School. His career includes visiting scholar appointments at the Agricultural Development Economics Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at the University of Wyoming, the Department of Agricultural and Food Market Research at the University of Bonn, and the Centre for Global Food and Resources at the University of Adelaide.
Morales specializes in agro-food markets, consumer preferences, price transmission, and agricultural value chains. His research examines spatial price premium transmission for Meat Standards Australia graded cattle, the effects of international price volatility on farmer prices and marketing margins in cattle markets, branding of fresh food products, and willingness to pay for beef. He contributed to the project 'Chain Failure and Chain Goods in Sustainable Food Value Chains' from 2015 to 2017. Key publications include 'Variables affecting the propensity to buy branded beef' (2013, co-authored with Griffith, Wright, Fleming, Umberger, and Hoang), 'Spatial price premium transmission for Meat Standards Australia-graded cattle: the vulnerability of price premiums to outside shocks' (2017, with Hoang and Stuen), 'The effects of international price volatility on farmer prices and marketing margins in cattle markets' (2018), 'Preferences for Certified Beef with Animal Welfare and Other Credence Attributes' (2020), and 'Assessing the Impact of Adoption of Improved Seed Yam Technology in Cameroon' (2020, with Nchinda, Hadley, and Villano). He has served as Guest Editor for the Special Issue on Sustainability and Product Differentiation in the journal Sustainability.
