L. Luis Lopez earned his Ph.D. in English from the University of New Mexico in 1985, completing his dissertation titled "The Rhetoric in Middle English Alliterative Dream Poetry" under the direction of Professor Pollock. This work highlights his focus on medieval English literature. He previously received his M.A. from St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Lopez's academic background prepared him for a career in teaching and honors education.
Lopez taught in the Academic Honors Program at the University of New Mexico. He subsequently served as a professor at Colorado Mesa University, instructing in English, Latin, Ancient Greek, and mythology, directing the institution's Academic Honors Program, and holding the title of professor emeritus. He has been awarded two National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships, including one in summer 1983 to study lyric poetry with Dr. Helen Vendler at Harvard University and another to examine the literature of innocent suffering with Dr. Terrence Tilley at Duke University and St. Michael's College.
In the realm of literature, Lopez is a prolific poet whose collections include Musings of a Barrio Sack Boy (Farolito Press, 2000), A Painting of Sand: Poems from Ghost Ranch (Farolito Press, 2000), Each Month I Sing (Farolito Press, 2008), and More Musings of a Barrio Sack Boy (2017). His poetry has been featured in anthologies such as Once Upon a Place (Night Owl Books, 2008), Charity (Red Rock Press, 2002), The Geography of Hope (Conundrum Press, 2000), and Talking From the Heart (Men's Network Press, 1990), as well as journals including Fan: A Baseball Magazine, Karamu, Motley, Pinyon Poetry, and The Americas Review. For his poetic contributions, he received the 2008 American Book Award.
