Brings real-world insights to the classroom.
Lauren Miller is a PhD candidate and paediatric registrar in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at the University of Otago. She serves as a postgraduate student in the Children's Sleep Health Research Group, led by Professor Barbara Galland. Miller is actively involved in the Preschool Cam Study, conducting home visits and managing day-to-day operations alongside Sarahmarie Kuroko and Maddie Rowan. This study employs wearable camera technology to evaluate pre-bedtime routines in preschool children, aiming to pinpoint aspects of bedtime routines and activities, including screen use, that most significantly impact sleep quality and duration. For this research, she received the New Zealand Freemasons Postgraduate Fellowship in Paediatrics and Child Health for 2022–2023.
In addition, Lauren Miller participates in the Obesity Research Group as a postgraduate student. Her contributions include projects on defining, identifying, and intervening for rapid infant weight gain using real-time growth records in collaboration with Whānau Āwhina Plunket; developing an integrated egrowth chart combining data from Plunket, primary, and secondary care with decision support for rapid growth identification, in partnership with South Link clinical solutions; and the Prevention of Overweight in Infancy (POI) programme. She is also associated with the Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy Research group, contributing to studies on safer sleep options.
