About Lauren

Lauren Rosewarne is an Associate Professor in Public Policy in the School of Social and Political Sciences, Faculty of Arts, at the University of Melbourne. She earned her PhD in Political Science from the University of Melbourne in 2002. Her research and teaching focus on gender, sexuality, feminism, popular culture, media representations, film and television analysis, and public policy. Rosewarne investigates topics such as the portrayal of intimacy and cyber interactions in media, cultural taboos, infidelity, cyberbullying, and the societal impacts of technology on relationships and courtship. She is recognized for her work on how popular media shapes perceptions of sex, politics, and society.

Rosewarne has built her career at the University of Melbourne, advancing from Senior Lecturer to Associate Professor. She is a prolific author with several books that have contributed to discussions in cultural studies and media analysis. Notable publications include Why We Remake: The Politics, Economics and Emotions of Film and TV Remakes (2020), exploring the reasons behind Hollywood remakes; The Twin Film Phenomenon: The Whys of Lookalike Film and TV (forthcoming or recent); Masturbation in Pop Culture (2014); Cyberbullies, Cyberactivists, Cyberpredators: Film, TV, and Internet (2016); Intimacy on the Internet: Media Representations of Online Connections; Part-Time Perverts: Sex, Crime, and Late Capitalism (2012); Cheating on the Sisterhood: Infidelity and Feminism (2009); and American Taboo: The Forbidden Words, Unspoken Rules, and Secret Morality of Everyday Life (2010).
