About Laurentiu

Laurentiu Paunescu is Professor in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Sydney, where he earned his PhD in 1992 with a dissertation entitled 'A Weighted Version of the Kuiper-Kuo-Bochnak-Lojasiewicz Theorem.' He has held positions at the University of Sydney throughout his academic career, advancing to Senior Lecturer by 2005 and subsequently to full Professor. Paunescu serves as the Honours Coordinator for Pure Mathematics and is a key member of the Geometry and Topology research group within the School. He has organized several Australian-Japanese Workshops on Real and Complex Singularities, including JARCS Sydney 2013 and others, contributing to international collaboration in the field.

Paunescu's research specializes in real and complex singularities, stratifications, and real and complex algebraic geometry. His interests encompass geometric criteria for determining when higher-order terms in weighted Taylor expansions can be ignored without altering topological type, classification of real singularities via blow-analytic equivalence, the interplay between real and complex Milnor fibres, negative derivations of quasihomogeneous complete intersections, topology of real projective hypersurfaces informed by complex singularities, complex polynomials as components of algebraic automorphisms of C^n with behavior at infinity, and connectivity of affine complex hypersurfaces based on weighted Taylor expansions. Notable publications include 'The Lipschitz type of the geometric directional bundle' (2024, European Journal of Mathematics, with Satoshi Koike), 'Zariski’s dimensionality type of singularities. Case of dimensionality type 2' (2024, Journal of Algebraic Geometry, with Adam Parusiński), 'The fundamental theorem of algebra via real polynomials' (2023, American Mathematical Monthly, with Daniel Daners), 'Lipschitz stratification of complex hypersurfaces in codimension 2' (2023, Journal of the European Mathematical Society, with Adam Parusiński), 'Arc-wise analytic stratification, Whitney fibering conjecture and Zariski equisingularity' (2017, Advances in Mathematics, with Adam Parusiński), 'Hyperbolic polynomials and multiparameter real-analytic perturbation theory' (2008, Duke Mathematical Journal, with Krzysztof Kurdyka), and co-edited volumes such as 'The Fifth Japanese-Australian Workshop on Real and Complex Singularities (JARCS SYDNEY 2013)' (2015). His scholarship has amassed over 600 citations on Google Scholar, underscoring his influence in singularity theory and related areas.
