Great Professor!
Associate Professor Lawrence Reeves serves in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, Faculty of Science, at the University of Melbourne. He completed his Bachelor of Science with Honours and PhD at the University of Melbourne, with his doctoral thesis entitled "Biautomatic structures and combinatorics for cube complexes" in 1995. Reeves specializes in geometric group theory, focusing on areas such as Coxeter groups, Thompson groups, JSJ decompositions of groups, and automatic groups. His scholarly contributions include publications like "Irrational-slope versions of Thompson's groups T and V" (Proceedings of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society, 2022), "An irrational-slope Thompson's group" (co-authored with José Burillo and Brita Nucinkis), arXiv preprints on dominance and regularity in Coxeter groups (2019 and 2018), "A combination theorem for strong relative hyperbolicity" (Geometry & Topology, 2008, co-authored with Mahan Mj), "The geometry of cube complexes and the complexity of their fundamental groups" (1998), "Uniform non-amenability" (2005), and contributions to the book on JSJ decompositions of groups with co-authors Scott and Swarup. His work has garnered over 500 citations as per academic profiles.
Reeves holds key administrative positions including Director of the Bachelor of Science, Deputy Director of the Bachelor of Science, Academic Advising Lead for the Faculty of Science, and Deputy Director of the Melbourne-Peking Virtual Research Hub for Mathematics and Statistics. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2023. In teaching, he coordinates courses such as the Bachelor of Science program and delivers advanced subjects including Geometric Group Theory (AMSI summer course), Linear Algebra: Advanced, Measure Theory, Algebra, Group Theory, and Linear Algebra. He supervises current PhD students Adrian McGahen, Bailey McLellan, and Thomas Hammer, along with recent vacation scholarship students on Coxeter groups (Tamalyn Davies, 2024), diagram groups (Leigh Greville, 2023), and Thompson's Group F (King Theng, 2020). Reeves also serves as Course Coordinator for the Bachelor of Science (Honours).
