Leanne Carter is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Marketing in the Faculty of Business and Economics at Macquarie University, where she also serves as Program Director for the Bachelor of Commerce since 2016. With over 20 years in academia, she has taught undergraduate and postgraduate subjects in marketing and management, supervised honours and PhD students, and led initiatives in Work Integrated Learning (WIL). Previously, as Academic Director of PACE from 2011 to 2015, she embedded WIL into the curriculum for every undergraduate student in her faculty and forged partnerships with industry entities. Her career at Macquarie began in 2001 as an Associate Lecturer, following positions at the University of Western Sydney and fifteen years in industry, including roles as National Training Manager at Woolworths Ltd. and National Education Manager at the Australian Direct Marketing Association. Carter holds a PhD in Business from Macquarie University (2010), Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing) with First Class Honours (2002) and Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing) (1995) from the University of Western Sydney, and a Diploma in Teaching from Sydney Teachers College (1982).
Her research focuses on consumer behaviour, internal marketing, market orientation, employability through graduate capabilities developed in internships and WIL, social marketing, learning orientation, business simulations, and peer assessment. Notable publications include her textbook Social Marketing: Good Intentions, 2nd Edition (2014), which examines barriers to behaviour change in social, environmental, health, and safety issues; "Management students’ expectations and perceptions on work readiness" (Chavan & Carter, International Journal of Educational Management, 2018, 117 citations); "Inertia in services: causes and consequences for switching" (Gray et al., Journal of Services Marketing, 2017, 82 citations); "Binge drinking: A review and research agenda" (D'Alessandro et al., Journal of Consumer Behaviour, 2023); and "Work integrated learning internships in transnational education: Alumni perspectives from Vietnam" (Bilsland et al., Education + Training, 2019). Carter has earned the Macquarie University Research Excellence Award (2014) for the 'State of the Mobile Nation' project, B/HERT Award for Best Higher Education & Training Collaboration (2013), and Australian Marketing Institute NSW Chapter Award for Marketing Excellence (2012), among others. With 251 Scopus citations and an h-index of 8, her work has influenced marketing education and employability strategies.
