Dr. Roger Lee Huang is a Senior Lecturer in the School of International Studies within the Faculty of Arts at Macquarie University. He holds a PhD in Asian and International Studies from City University of Hong Kong (2016), an MSc in Nationalism and Ethnicity from the London School of Economics (2005), and a BA in International Relations and East Asian Studies from Bucknell University (2004). His career includes previous positions at Lingnan University in Hong Kong, the Democratic Progressive Party and Academia Sinica in Taiwan, and an internship with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Yangon, Myanmar. Huang currently convenes courses such as PICT 1011 New Security Challenges and PICT 3013 Strategies of Political Violence.
Huang's research specializations encompass authoritarian regimes, contentious politics and political violence, the politics of Southeast Asia—particularly Myanmar and Thailand—and Taiwan’s security and international relations. He is the author of the book The Paradox of Myanmar’s Regime Change (2020). Key publications include “Re-thinking Myanmar's political regime: military rule in Myanmar and implications for current reforms” (Contemporary Politics, 2013, 116 citations), “Myanmar’s Way to Democracy and the Limits of the 2015 Elections” (Asian Journal of Political Science, 2017, 75 citations), “Challenging digital authoritarianism: Milk Tea Alliance and transnational solidarity” (2022, 15 citations), and “China's Belt and Road Initiative in Myanmar: Governance and state-society implications” (2023). He has contributed chapters such as “Chinese Foreign Direct Investment in Myanmar: investment realization and effects” (Routledge, 2026). Awards include the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (2011), Chow Yei Ching School of Graduate Studies Entrance Scholarships (2011), and Emerging Scholars Scheme (2018). Huang demonstrates significant influence through over 100 press/media contributions, 18 invited talks, conference presentations, and affiliations as Research Affiliate at the Southeast Asia Research Centre (City University of Hong Kong) and Affiliate Member at the Sydney Southeast Asia Centre (University of Sydney).
