Dr. Lewes Peddell is a Senior Lecturer in mathematics and music education in the Faculty of Education at Southern Cross University, where he also serves as Director of Initial Teacher Education Accreditation. Holding a PhD and Master of Music from the University of Minnesota, a Graduate Diploma in Music from Griffith University, a Bachelor of Music from the Queensland Conservatorium, and a Diploma of Teaching from Brisbane College of Advanced Education, he brings nearly 30 years of experience in education and school leadership across Australia and the United States. Prior to joining Southern Cross University in 2018, Dr. Peddell was Director of Research, Learning and Enterprise at Canterbury College in Queensland, as well as Director of Arts Academy and Acting Director of Curriculum, during which he taught music and mathematics. His extensive background includes leadership positions in higher education sectors in both countries and K-12 schools in Queensland, informed by over 20 years of teaching in mathematics and music.
Dr. Peddell's research program centers on teaching improvement in K-12 settings, utilizing well-being, communities of practice, organizational structures, and social network analysis, with a particular emphasis on mathematics education and teacher identity. He is a member of the TeachLab research group within the Faculty of Education and contributes to centers such as Sustainability, Environment, and the Arts in Education (SEAE) and Early Years Research Lab. Key publications include "Development of a teacher of mathematics identity (ToMI) scale" (2023, Mathematics Education Research Journal), "How Do Principals of High Performing Schools Achieve Sustained Improvement Results?" (2020, IAFOR Journal of Education), "Developing a heutagogy approach to promoting teacher competencies in Indonesia" (2021, Cypriot Journal of Educational Sciences), and "Teacher of mathematics identity as a predictor of teacher wellbeing" (2023, The Australian Educational Researcher). Dr. Peddell has been awarded the Southern Cross University Award for Research Excellence and leads the development of the Professional Certificate in Teaching Mathematics for out-of-field teachers, approved under the Federal Government’s Microcredentials Pilot. His work addresses critical issues such as the national shortage of mathematics teachers, especially in rural and regional areas.
