Dr. Liffey Rimmer serves as a Senior Professional Practice Fellow and Regional Co-ordinator for Wairoa at the University of Otago's Centre for Rural Health, within the Faculty of Medicine. A New Zealand-born and trained general practitioner, she brings extensive clinical experience to her academic role. Her career began with several years of urban general practice before she shifted to locum positions in the rural community of Wairoa, located in northern Hawke's Bay. This transition ignited her passion for rural medicine, leading her to pursue further qualifications tailored to this field. Dr. Rimmer completed the University of Otago Diploma in Rural Medicine. In 2023, she achieved Fellowship in Rural Hospital Medicine through the Prior Specialist Pathway, humorously noting herself as the oldest registrar in New Zealand to complete the necessary requirements during this phase.
In her capacity with the Rural Medical Immersion Programme (RMIP), Dr. Rimmer coordinates regional activities in Wairoa, supporting medical students immersed in rural settings. She emphasizes fostering self-motivation among students, instilling a lifelong commitment to learning, and preparing them for the unique challenges of rural medical practice. Her teaching extends to registrars and fifth-year medical students, helping establish Wairoa as a key training hub. Previously recognized as a Clinical Leader for the Say Ahh Rheumatic Fever Prevention Programme in Hastings, Dr. Rimmer now holds the position of Clinical Director, actively contributing to clinical leadership and education in rural health. Her dedication aligns with the Centre for Rural Health's mission, which reports directly to the Head of the Faculty of Medicine and consolidates the university's efforts in rural health education, training, and research. Through her roles, Dr. Rimmer exemplifies the bridge between clinical practice and academic mentorship in addressing rural health needs.
