Lisa Carey is a Lecturer in Speech Pathology within the Faculty of Health at Southern Cross University, based at the Coffs Harbour campus in Queensland, Australia. She holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Speech Pathology (BAppSci(SpPath)) from the University of Sydney. In her role as a Unit Writer for the Faculty of Health, she contributes to the creation and delivery of educational content for students in the speech pathology program. Southern Cross University introduced its Bachelor of Speech Pathology in 2013, and Lisa Carey is one of the dedicated speech pathology academics supporting this initiative through teaching and program development.
Lisa Carey co-authored the publication 'Ready to practice in hospitals? Insights into developing a co-designed speech pathology placement for first-year students,' published in the Journal of Clinical Practice in Speech-Language Pathology (Volume 26, Issue 2, pages 117-127, 2024). The article, also available as a preprint on SSRN, details the collaborative process between Southern Cross University Faculty of Health staff and hospital partners to design an innovative 13-week hospital-based clinical placement for first-year students. This approach aims to enhance student readiness for professional practice, addressing previous challenges like attrition rates and the need for early hands-on experience in speech-language pathology settings. As noted in the paper, Lisa Carey reflected on the transition from traditional placements to this co-designed model, emphasizing the benefits for student skill development and clinical confidence. Her involvement underscores her commitment to improving speech pathology education and preparing future practitioners for hospital environments. Additionally, she participates in key student events, such as the inaugural 'Kick Off' orientation for speech pathology students at the Coffs Harbour campus.
