Lisa Graham is a Professor of Art in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Texas at Arlington, where she has held faculty appointments since 1992. She earned an MFA in Graphic Design from Iowa State University in 1992 and a BFA in Graphic Design and Drawing from the University of Northern Iowa in 1989. Promoted to full Professor in Fall 2013, Graham teaches courses in visual communication foundation, research in visual communication, history of graphic design, publication design, visual identity systems, art criticism and theory, and sustainable design. Her academic interests encompass gestalt theory in interactive media design, experience design, environmental typography, design ethics, and sustainable graphic design philosophy. Graham is LEED AP certified and has mentored students who have collectively earned over 225 design awards and exhibition placements since 1998.
Graham is a prolific author and editor, with key publications including Sustainability Research by Designers (edited, Common Ground Publishing, 2011), Basics of Design: Layout and Typography for Beginners (Delmar Cengage Learning, 2002; second edition, 2005; Japanese edition, 2008), Principles of Interactive Design (Delmar Publishers, 1999), and co-authorship of Graphic Design: A New History (second edition, Yale University Press, 2012) with Stephen J. Eskilson. She has delivered numerous paper presentations and published journal articles on her research specializations. As an artist, her digital art and design prints have appeared in over 210 regional, national, and international exhibitions in locations including Dallas, Honolulu, Tehran, Limassol, Cheonan, Kharkiv, and Tokyo. Her poster designs have been selected for competitions such as Graphis Poster Competition (award, 2021), Hermes Creative Awards (gold, 2020; honorable mention, 2020), Davey Awards (silver, 2019), UDA Poster Competition (grand environmental poster design, 2019), C2Awards (2019), Macchu Picchu Museum (2019), Mexican Museum of Design (2016), International Poster Biennial in Mexico (2016), X International Eco-poster Triennial (2018), and Gwangju Poster Bienniale (2019). Graham has received College of Liberal Arts teaching awards and service recognitions at UTA, including listing in Faculty Creative Works celebrations.
