Lisa Lamb is the Qualcomm Endowed Professor of Mathematics Education in San Diego State University's School of Teacher Education, College of Education. She holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from San Diego State University and the University of California San Diego (1999), an M.A. in Mathematics from San Diego State University (1993), and a B.S. in Mathematics from the College of William and Mary (1987). Before entering academia, Lamb taught high school mathematics at public schools in Virginia (Osbourn Park High School, 1987-1990) and California (University City High School, 1990-1991; La Jolla High School, 1991-1994). She joined San Diego State University as a Research Assistant in 1994, became an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education in 1998, Associate Professor in 2005, and full Professor in 2014. Affiliated with the Center for Research in Mathematics and Science Education (CRMSE), her research focuses on students' ways of reasoning about integers and teachers' professional noticing of students' mathematical ideas. Lamb collaborates with colleagues to support Master Teaching Fellows in mathematics and science as they develop teaching practices and leadership skills.
As Principal Investigator or co-Principal Investigator, Lamb has led major funded projects, including the National Science Foundation's Advancing Teacher Leadership in Urban Schools Noyce Mathematics and Science Master Teaching Fellowship Program ($2,999,825, 2020-2025), Supporting Science Teaching: SDSU’s Noyce Science Interns and Scholars Program ($1,249,500, 2014-2021), and Mapping Developmental Trajectories of Students' Conceptions of Integers ($1,637,340, 2009-2014). Her publications include refereed journal articles such as 'A Cross-Sectional Investigation of Students’ Reasoning About Integer Addition and Subtraction: Ways of Reasoning, Problem Types, and Flexibility' (Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 2018), 'Beyond the Sign Rules: Problem Types and Ways of Reasoning for Addition and Subtraction of Integers' (Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK–12, 2022), and 'Integer Comparisons Across the Grades: Students’ Justifications and Ways of Reasoning' (Journal of Mathematical Behavior, 2017). Lamb has earned the SDSU Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Faculty Contributions to the University (College of Education recipient, 2019-2020), Outstanding Faculty Member award from CRMSE (2013, 2018), Most Influential Faculty Member for School of Teacher Education MA programs (2014), and Outstanding Mathematics Teacher at the post-secondary level (Greater San Diego Mathematics Council, 2004). Her contributions have advanced mathematics education research and teacher professional development.
