Liz Johnson is Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Xavier University in the College of Arts and Sciences. She joined the faculty during the 1997-98 academic year as one of two hires to strengthen the undergraduate computer science program in the mid-1990s. Johnson assumed the chair position of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science in 2012 and now leads the independent Computer Science Department. Her office is located at 135 Hinkle Hall, with contact details including phone 513-745-3667 and email johnsone@xavier.edu. She also serves as Chair of the Core Curriculum Quantitative Reasoning Flag Committee, managing course proposals submitted to qrflag@xavier.edu with copies to her email.
Johnson's teaching spans introductory to advanced computer science courses, as documented in Xavier University's Exhibit repository of syllabi. These include CSCI 170-01/02 Computer Science I (various semesters including Fall 2023), CSCI 180/181 Computer Science II and Lab (e.g., Spring 2008), CSCI 220-01/02 Data Structures and Algorithms (Fall 2019), CSCI 260 Software Engineering (Spring 2013), CSCI 300-01 Programming Languages (Spring 2024), CSCI 350-01 Advanced Algorithms and Theory (recent), CSCI 174 Programming in C (2021), CSCI 210-01 Machine Organization and Assembly Language (2017), and CSCI 340-01/02 Networking (Spring 2024). In scholarship, she co-authored 'Fostering a creative interest in computer science' with Gary Lewandowski, published in ACM SIGCSE Bulletin (Volume 37, Issue 1, March 2005, pages 535-539), focusing on revising introductory computer science curricula to spark creativity. Her ACM Digital Library profile lists contributions to computer science education, concurrency, and broadening participation. Johnson received a faculty development award with colleagues Gary Lewandowski and Gwen White for developing a cybersecurity minor. She has supported new programs including a cybersecurity concentration launched in 2018 and recent majors in cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.
