A true mentor who cares about success.
Liz Kemp holds the position of Professional Practice Fellow and Centre Co-ordinator at the University of Otago School of Physiotherapy, within the Faculty of Health Professional Programmes and Health Sciences Division. She earned her Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPhty) from the University of Otago in 1996. Earlier in her career, Liz Kemp worked as a clinical supervisor at the University of Otago Wellington Clinic. Currently based in the Hutt Valley, she serves as the Northern Centre co-ordinator and educator, managing all fourth-year Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPhty) and BPhty(Hons) student placements across the Hawkes Bay, Palmerston North, Hutt Valley, Wanganui, and Wellington regions. She oversees Physiotherapy HUBS in these areas and acts as the paper co-ordinator for PHTY455 Physiotherapy Clinical Practice 3. Additionally, Liz Kemp is the Interprofessional Education (IPE) Campus Lead for University of Otago Wellington, contributing to initiatives that integrate education across health professions.
The Northern Centre, under Liz Kemp's coordination, provides a key teaching base for clinical education and hands-on experience in district health boards and community settings. Students complete clinical blocks and a research block, preparing them for registration to practice independently as physiotherapists in New Zealand. As a clinical educator, she supports students in building clinical competencies, including in areas such as acute stroke rehabilitation, while emphasizing patient rights, informed consent, ethical and legal responsibilities, and culturally sensitive practice. Liz Kemp promotes pastoral care, work-life balance, and access to support networks, viewing student interactions as a mutual feedback process focused on strengths and growth opportunities. Her contributions extend to scholarly work, including co-authorship of the 2021 publication 'Keeping it going: the importance of delivering interprofessional education during the COVID-19 pandemic' in the Journal of Interprofessional Care. Through these roles, Liz Kemp significantly influences the training and professional readiness of future physiotherapists.
